The speaker yearns for Nathicana, an idealized, deathless beloved associated with the pale gardens of Zaïs, but his vision is clouded by madness, redness, and the “horrible coma” of waking existence. The poem becomes a lament for a lost mystical world, where earthly beauty feels hollow compared to the unreachable perfection of Nathicana.
