The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, translated and interpreted by Charles Johnston, presents one of the foundational texts of classical yoga philosophy: a concise guide to disciplining the mind, overcoming distraction, and realizing the true Self beyond ordinary thought and sensation. Organized as brief aphorisms, the work describes yoga as the stilling of the fluctuations of consciousness, then outlines the obstacles, practices, ethical restraints, meditative stages, and spiritual powers that arise on the path toward liberation. Johnston’s version frames Patanjali’s teaching as both a practical psychology and a mystical science, emphasizing concentration, detachment, moral purity, and inward contemplation as the means by which the seeker passes from restless mental activity into clarity, insight, and final freedom.
