The Cloud of Unknowing (an anonymous 14th-century Christian mystical text often presented in modern editions with Evelyn Underhill’s introduction/editorial work) is a practical guide to contemplative prayer that teaches the seeker to move beyond discursive thinking and images in order to “know” God by love rather than intellect: because God is ultimately inaccessible to the mind, the contemplative accepts a “cloud of unknowing” between the soul and God, lets created things fade into a “cloud of forgetting,” and repeatedly directs the heart toward God with a simple, wordless intent—sometimes aided by a short word (like “God” or “love”)—persevering through dryness and distraction with humility, patience, and focused desire until the will is gently gathered into a deeper, quieter union.

"Lamia" is the English Romantic poet John Keats's lush, eerie tale of enchantment defeated by merciless rationality. Set in the world of ancient Greco-Roman myth, the poem tells the story of the serpent-spirit Lamia, who talks the god Hermes into transforming her into a beautiful woman so she can pursue her beloved, a handsome young man named Lycius. The couple is blissfully happy for a time, but their joy can't last. Icy reason, in the form of the philosopher Apollonius, at last punctures their shared dream. Often remembered as a Romantic screed against "cold philosophy," this poem is in fact a nuanced and ambivalent portrait of the beauties and dangers of the imagination, especially the imaginative visions of lovers. Keats published this poem in his 1820 collection Lamia, Isabella, the Eve of St. Agnes, and Other Poems. Sanai’s The Enclosed Garden of the Truth (Ḥadīqat al-Ḥaqīqa wa Sharīʿat al-Ṭarīqa) is a long didactic Sufi masnavi in Persian (composed c. 1130–1131) that uses praise, argument, and parable to map the whole religious life from outward law to inward realization, insisting that intellect and doctrine are inadequate unless they ripen into lived knowledge, humility, and divine love. Across its ten-part architecture it attacks ego, hypocrisy, and courtly/worldly ambition, contrasts surface piety with sincerity, and repeatedly redirects the reader from attachment to things and reputation toward the purification of the heart and the single reality of God—presenting the path as an interior transformation rather than a set of slogans or social roles. Mead's comprehensive surveys of the literature attributed to the legendary Egyptian sage, Hermes Trismegistus. The so-called Hermetic writings have been known to Christian writers for many centuries. The early church Fathers (Justin Martyr, Tertullian, Clement of Alexandria) quote them in defense of Christianity. Stobaeus collected fragments of them. The Humanists knew and valued them. They were studied in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and in modern times have again been diligently examined by many scholars. G. R. S. Mead has issued a translation of the whole body of extant literature, with extended prolegomena, commentary, etc. There is a wide difference of opinion as to the date at which this literature was produced. Mead believes that some of the extant portions of it are at least as early as the earliest Christian writings, while von Christ assigns them to the third Christian century, and thinks that they show the influence of neo-Platonism. To affirm that they influenced New Testament usage would be hazardous, but they perhaps throw some light on the direction in which thought was moving in New Testament times.
