The Enuma Elish, in L.W. King’s translation, tells the Babylonian creation story in which the young god Marduk rises to power by defeating the chaos-dragon Tiamat. From her divided body he forms the ordered universe, assigns the stations of the gods, and creates humanity from the blood of a rebel deity. King’s rendering captures the epic’s blend of divine conflict and cosmic architecture, presenting a clear account of how the ancient Babylonians understood the origin of the world and the establishment of divine kingship. Due to the obviously ancient status of the tablets, there are sections of the epic which are damaged and/or missing. Please keep this in mind when listening to the narration as it might sound staggered or cut off in some sections. Some parts are only groupings of fragmented words which lack greater context. All this being said, the narration was recited in a way to preserve a certain dramatic flow while trying to signal the breaks in the text.
